Hello parents and students!
My name is Kristen Mace and I am proud to be the 6th grade Global Studies teacher at Hammond Academy of Science and Technology. This is my third full year as a teacher at HAST, but I have been in the building as a substitute teacher since the building's opening in August 2011. I am from Lansing, Illinois and attended college at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois where I graduated in 2011 with a B.A. in Secondary Education: Social Science.
I love Social History and Teddy Roosevelt and hope to share that passion with my students for years to come. I enjoy learning about historical figures, social movements, and the American wild West. The fun challenge is incorporating those interests and random facts wherever I can. Currently, I am also the HAST Advisor for the National Junior Honor Society. While I am not in the classroom you can typically find me reading, traveling, and ziplining in my spare time. Spending as much time outside taking in the glorious features of our country is humbling for any individual. Teddy Roosevelt once said, “It is not what we have that will make us a great nation; it is the way in which we use it.” This is how I live my life and teach. It is not what you know or have that is important; it is how you use that knowledge and skill to make your life and those around you better that counts.
My goal for 2017-2018 is to share my passion for history and get these 6th graders thinking, questioning, reflecting on the world around them, and then challenging and changing what others have come to accept.
